Cervicalcheck is Ireland’s National Cervical Screening Programme. Cervical screening (the "smear" test) is a method of preventing cervical cancer by detecting abnormal cells in the cervix (lower part of the womb). Cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but it is a test to check the health of the cervix. In Ireland about 200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. It is the second most common type of female cancer in Europe.

CervicalCheck, provides free cervical screening (a free smear test) to women and people with a cervix aged between 25 and 65. To register for your free cervical screening test, please go to www.cervicalcheck.ie. Then please contact us at reception@leesonclinic.ie or book online to schedule your free cervical smear test with Dr. Sheila Byrne. Please note that in order to optimise your screening test, it is recommended not to attend for your cervical smear test during your menstrual period, and to wait at least 3 months after delivery or miscarriage before booking your cervical screening test.

If you have a cervix, you could get cervical cancer. Approximately 90% of cervical cancers are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is spread through sexual contact. HPV can cause changes to the cells of the cervix over time.

Cervical screening is a simple procedure that only takes minutes and is the most effective way to detect changes in the cells of the cervix. Results are usually posted to you within 4-6 weeks of attending for your smear test. Most women's test results show that everything is normal. But for one in 20 women, the test will show some changes in the cells of the cervix.

At Leeson Clinic, we manage abnormal screening test results in line with national guidelines. Dr. Byrne will contact you to discuss your abnormal smear test result, answer any questions you may have and help arrange follow-up or referral, as recommended by national guidelines.
